Frank Lloyd Wright vs Le Corbusier Essays
Frank Lloyd Wright vs Le Corbusier Essays Frank Lloyd Wright vs Le Corbusier Essay Frank Lloyd Wright vs Le Corbusier Essay During this postwar era, modernism dove eloped because of the common influences of Wright and Couriers and the different infill ounce s of Wright and Couriers. Wright and Couriers had many common influences during the modernist pee riot. Some of these common influences are their use of geometric shapes and they both referred to their works as organic. For example Frank Lloyd Wright designed a snail shaped m assume with a winding interior for the display of artwork called the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum . He introduced circles and curves in this. Also Lee Courtiers Villa Savoy is very sys metrical and is all geometric shapes. Lastly, both architects were fascinated by new techno skies. They rose to the challenge of the automobile and its role as a monopolizing force in architecture Even though Wright and Couriers have many common influences they also h eave many different individual influences. Wright was fascinated by the automobile, convinced of its attention to revolutionist modern life. He felt that it had created possibilities of new communities based on a new knowledge of time and space. The rural isolation of Wrights c itty is only possible through the highways that connect its homesteads. Lee Couriers looked to technology to promote a different trend. While also revering myths, he was principally inter Estes in the energy of new constructs, recreating old paradigms instead of reviving them. :

My Lifes Experience and Identity vs. Elaine Risley Essay
My Lifes Experience and Identity vs. Elaine Risley - Essay Example My case is no different from the person that I am today has greatly been determined by the experiences and the socialization processes that I went through as a child. Evidently, the childhood stage determines how one interacts with others, and even shape the kind of personality that an individual acquires. As seen in the novel, Elaine joins high school and it is at this point that her personality completely shifts from an introvert to a social person and an extrovert (Atwood 22). This transition can be related to the fact that in her childhood she did not have the right people an opportunity to converse with and even interact with. This is similar to my situation. When I was a child, I could barely communicate with others because my parent always questioned my doings, and I was, therefore, afraid that everything I did was wrong. Upon joining high school, my confidence was restored, and I began talking to people often. An individualââ¬â¢s experiences have major effects on the identity of individuals. In the novel, Elaine is seen to lead a very happy life before moving to Toronto despite her having friends (Atwood 22). In the course of her childhood, Elaine goes through terrible experiences such as being put in a hole in the name of game playing (Atwood 120). It is in this hole that she went through terror, fright, sadness, and betrayal. Her friends take advantage of her naivety and innocence to take advantage of her; though Elaine believed that her friends wanted to include her in the game. It would take time for Elaine to be embraced in the group since her fellow finds like Cordelia think that she is not normal (Atwood 134). Elaine stands the bullying from her friends and does not tell her parents or even the teacher. Her self-esteem is then damaged, a fact that determines her identity and personality.

Microsoft Corporation as an Example of a Monopoly Assignment
Microsoft Corporation as an Example of a Monopoly - Assignment Example The author of the paper states that as a protagonist of monopoly championed this practice for cartels as they maintain that its existence leads to an increase in the number of research and development projects as they earn more profits. Although, the companies operate solely in the market and get the high return it does not invest the funds for research and development. Microsoft Corporation as an example of a monopoly has not shown considerable investment in the field of research and development as thought (Jones and Sufrin 573). On the contrary, as a result of obtaining patent rights companies that operate under monopoly, including Microsoft do not have any incentives to innovate other new varieties of products that specialize in the one. Because of these, many countries impose a limit on the number of years companies can hold to their patent of rights (Salanià © 188).à Microsoftââ¬â¢s research and development is mainly because of its competitors but once these competitors wh o operate server operating system market stops Microsoft Company will also no longer see the benefit of carrying out more research and development as it has already come up with a lock-in effect strategy on its customers. Through this strategy, Microsoft can effectively engage its customers in homogenous solutions made by Microsoft worldwide. It is, therefore, definite that monopoly companies do not wish to spend the large amounts of profits it accumulates in research and development. Without a doubt, these monopoly companies would be adamant to produce only those products that are conducive and acceptable to the consumer rather than being innovative and make new products for its customers.

Misogyny in Theogony Essay Example for Free
Misogyny in Theogony Essay In Theogony, Hesiod expresses misogynistic notions and shows the triviality of the creation of women. Hesiod portrays the insignificant role for women. He uses marriage as a light-hearted yet serious judgment and stereotypes against all women. Hesiod explains the most misogynistic attitudes in the story of Pandora. He works misogyny into female monsters and goddesses that use their tricks on men. Hesiod displays the dominance of the male sex in his poem, Theogony. Hesiod touches on his feelings toward the idea of marriage. Referring to Theogony, he states that the man who avoids marriage arrives at an old age with no one to look after him and distant relatives share out his living. The man who finds a good wife spends a life, that is balanced between evil and good, / A constant struggle.(393-394) While the man who gets an awful wife lives with, He lives with pain in the heart all down the line, / Pain in spirit and mind, incurable evil.(395-396) Hesiodââ¬â¢s idea of marriage is more of a teaching process with the man as dominant and the woman is to be controlled. The very creation of women was a punishment to mankind. Out of Zeus anger toward Prometheus, came Pandora, the first woman. Hesiod explains the thoughts of immortal gods and mortal men as they first glanced at the beautiful creation as ââ¬Å"sheer deception, irresistible to men. / From her is the race of female women, / The deadly race and population of women, / A great infestation among mortal men.â⬠(373-376) The only reason women live in this world is because of the sins of one male figure. Women have no other purpose in Hesiodââ¬â¢s words than to be the bad that upsets the good in the world. In Theogony, Hesiod mentions the monster Echidna stern of heart, who was half nymph with fair cheeks and curling lashes, and half a monstrous serpent, terrible and huge, glinting and ravening, down in the hidden depths of the numinous earth. This monster that Hesiod describes seems to parallel with his image of women: beautiful but deceiving. Theogony also describes Aphrodite as a modest and beautiful goddess. Although she is the goddess of intimacy, tenderness, and pleasure, she is also the goddess of deceptions. Aphrodite claims she is the most powerful because she can influence all other gods. Hesiod wrote this poem with a lot of misogynistic thoughts in mind. The idea of marriage is irrelevant except for the matter of reproduction of strong and courageous men in Theogony. The creation of women was originally a punishment to Prometheus but Hesiod shows that this is a punishment to all mankind. Women are also often compared to monsters and evil creatures. Hesiod states throughout his poem that women are often insignificant and trivial to the lives of men.

Social Commentary in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald :: free essay writer
The Great Gatsby:Ã Social Commentary On one level The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald comments on the careless gaiety and moral decadence of the period in which it was set. It contains innumerable references to the contemporary scene. The wild extravagance of Gatsby's parties, the shallowness and aimlessness of the guests and the hint of Gatsby's involvement in crime all identify the period and the American setting. But as a piece of social commentary The Great Gatsby also describes the failure of the American dream, from the point of view that American political ideals conflict with the actual social conditions that exist. For whereas American democracy is based on the idea of equality among people, the truth is that social discrimination still exists and the divisions among the classes cannot be overcome. Myrtle's attempt to break into the group to which the Buchanans belong is doomed to fail. Taking advantage of her vivacity, her lively nature, she seeks to escape from her own class. She enters into an affair wi th Tom and takes on his way of living. But she only becomes vulgar and corrupt like the rich. She scorns people from her own class and loses all sense of morality. And for all her social ambition, Myrtle never succeeds in her attempt to find a place for herself in Tom's class. When it comes to a crisis, the rich stand together against all outsiders. Myrtle's condition, of course, is a weaker reflection of Gatsby's more significant struggle. While Myrtle's desire springs from social ambition, Gatsby's is related more to his idealism, his faith in life's possibilities. Undoubtedly, his desire is also influenced by social considerations; Daisy, who is wealthy and beautiful, represents a way of life which is remote from Gatsby's and therefore more attractive because it is out of reach. However, social consciousness is not a basic cause. It merely directs and increases Gatsby's belief in life's possibilities. Like Myrtle, Gatsby struggles to fit himself into another social group, but his attempt is more urgent because his whole faith in life is involved in it. Failure, therefore, is more terrible for him. His whole career, his confidence in himself and in life is totally shattered when he fails to win Daisy. His death when it comes is almost insignificant, for, with the collapse of his dream, Gatsby is already spiritually dead. As social satire, The Great Gatsby is also a comment on moral decadence in modem American society.

Atheistic Existentialism â⬠Life Domains Essay
Directions: Complete the ââ¬Å"Atheistic Existentialismâ⬠column in the table below by filling in the cells from information provided in the textbook. Atheistic Existentialism / REALITY The only reality for an AE is the one they create for themselvesâ⬠¦everything is matter ââ¬â everything is connected as some form of matter or energy and in a cause and effect relationship Atheistic Existentialism / KNOWLEDGE The only knowledge comes from our own senses. Atheistic Existentialism / HUMAN NATURE To an AE ââ¬â humans are allowed free-will, personalities and consciences ââ¬â but donââ¬â¢t have any reason to do anything with it Atheistic Existentialism / HUMAN PROBLEMS Their problem is that they canââ¬â¢t deal with the fact that they have human personalities and tendencies ââ¬â but donââ¬â¢t know why, or what to do with it Atheistic Existentialism / SOLUTIONS TO HUMAN PROBLEMS Humans alone have the only solution to their problem and the more they evolve the better theyââ¬â¢ll be at fixing them, so live as if your inner desires do have some meaning and try to make an impact on the world. Atheistic Existentialism / HUMAN VALUE Truly there is no ultimate value of a human life, but Humans can have value because they create their own reality by making their own choices ââ¬â good or bad. Atheistic Existentialism / HUMAN PURPOSE Our only purpose ââ¬â according to an AE is that of making yourself into who or what you wish to be, otherwise there is no purpose. Atheistic Existentialism / ETHICS Ethics ââ¬â Schmethicsâ⬠¦As long as you make a conscience choice to do something ââ¬â good or bad ââ¬â you are determining what your ethics are. not living by the laws of man, or any other guide. Atheistic Existentialism / SUFFERING Nothing good comes of it ââ¬â there is no purpose for it ââ¬â so donââ¬â¢t do it. Atheistic Existentialism / MEANING OF LIFE There is no real meaning ââ¬â each individual is able to determine what life means to them by their choices to be or not to be, do or not do, etc. Atheistic Existentialism / HUMAN DESIRE Kill it! Donââ¬â¢t be led by your inner needs, wants, voices, it is absurd to follow these ââ¬Å"accidental causesâ⬠of evolution ââ¬â because you donââ¬â¢t need anything more than the basics to survive. Personal Reflection Directions: Briefly summarize your personal reflection on the information that you have entered into Tables 1 and 2 in this assignment. It is interesting to see the ââ¬Å"evolutionâ⬠of these 3 worldviews. From the Naturalist who views everything as natural in itââ¬â¢s existence ââ¬â you exist based on your senses and experiences alone to the Secular Humanist with their realization that humans are wonderful ââ¬â great creatures with personalities and determinations, but it doesnââ¬â¢t matterâ⬠¦to the Atheistic Existentialist (AE) ââ¬â who finally realizes that the innermost feelings and desires we have as humans do exist, but would be better off ââ¬Å"killedâ⬠or cut out than to be nurtured and followed. To me ââ¬â It is just manââ¬â¢s way of not wanting to give credit where credit is do! So many people feel they have to ââ¬Å"give upâ⬠so much to follow God. The only way Satan can ââ¬Å"winâ⬠is to have more souls in his army than God. He finds our weaknesses and zeroes in on them to keep us from realizing the truth. Manââ¬â¢s ego and sense of self is historically his ruination. Itââ¬â¢s easy to see how in these days, these 3 views ââ¬â all making humans the only thing that matter and by crossing out God, satan is able to lead many astray. (NIV) Matthew 7:13-14 â⬠13 ââ¬Å"Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.ââ¬
